12.
Derheq FSFE

13.

14. The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) is a non-profit and (in some
15. countries) charitable non-governmental organization dedicated to
16. Free Software as in freedom.
17.

18.
Vision of Free Software

19.

20. Access to software determines who may participate in a digital society.
21. Therefore, the freedoms to use, copy, modify and redistribute software --
22. as described in the
23. Free Software
24. definition -- allow equal participation in the information age.
25.

26.

27. The vision of Free Software is one of a stable basis for freedom in a
28. digital world -- both in an
29. economic and socio-ethical
30. context. Free Software is one important cornerstone for
31. freedom, democracy, human rights and
32. development in a digital society.
33.

34.

35. The FSFE is dedicated to supporting all aspects of Free Software in
36. Europe. Creating awareness for these issues, securing Free Software
37. politically and legally, and giving people freedom by supporting
38. development of Free Software are central issues of the FSFE.
39.

40.

41. For these reasons, FSFE was founded in 2001 as the European sister
42. organisation of the
43. Free Software Foundation in Boston, MA,
44. USA. Both are financially, legally and personally independent from each
45. other as parts of the international Free Software Foundation network.
46.

47.
Vision of Cooperation

48.

49. The second vision embodied in FSFE is that of a Europe united in the
50. spirit of co-operation across cultural boundaries.
51.

52.

53. Not only do we need to deal with the political reality of the European
54. Union, which already maintains large parts of the governance touching
55. upon the information society, but also we are finding ourselves working
56. in a field determined largely by large multinational companies. These
57. tend to work with a very high level of integration, coordination and
58. consistence between countries on a European and global scale, allowing
59. them to further their interest through "divide and conquer" tactics.
60.

61.

62. In and with the FSFE, we stand united and work together on local and
63. international levels, speaking with a voice that cannot be ignored.
64.

65.
Principles

66.

67. As an organisation based upon the European culture and background, we
68. believe in and are following fundamental principles such as democracy,
69. multilateralism, cooperation, dialog and transparency.
70.

71.

72. In short, we operate in a networked, team-based structure that is open to
73. anyone sharing the
74. common understanding of FSFE
75. and willing to participate.
76.

77.

78. We work hard to live up to these principles as much as possible, even
79. though reality in form of limited resources or other problems may at
80. times let us fall short of our ideals. If you think you have seen such a
81. case and can help us to improve, please get involved either
82. directly or through one of our
83. associate organisations.
84.

119.

120. The following organisations are sister organisations of the FSFE in the
121. global FSF network. We are working together legally, financially and
122. personally independent of each other in a spirit of equal cooperation.

139.
Support

140.

141. As a non-profit organisation, we are largely dependent upon people to
142. make our activities their own -- either by
143. getting involved or through
144. donations. Please do!
