  7. <h1>FSFE in battle for European interoperability</h1>
  8. <p newsteaser="yes">FSFE has unleashed an advocacy push in order to prevent the
  9. European Commission from hollowing out an important European
  10. reference document on interoperability. A draft for a new version
  11. of the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) leaked to the
  12. press last week.</p>
  13. <p>Where the current version strongly encourages the public sector to
  14. use Free Software and Open Standards, the draft threatens to
  15. replace this with meaningless statements which leave the European
  16. public sector at the mercy of proprietary software vendors.</p>
  17. <p>As the EC was gathering comments from Member States, FSFE
  18. contacted senior government staff across Europe, emphasising the
  19. danger posed by the new text and asking them to reject the draft.
  20. <a href="">FSFE's President Karsten
  21. Gerloff explained</a> the importance
  22. of the document, the problems in the draft, and the total failure
  23. of transparency in the processes which led up to the current text.</p>
  24. <p>Karsten Gerloff says: "FSFE will keep its eye on the ball as the
  25. situation develops over the coming days and weeks. With the help
  26. of our friends and supporters, we will work hard to fight off the
  27. current threat to interoperability in the public sector. We will
  28. seek the best possible result through constructive dialogue with
  29. Member States and the European Commission."</p>
