9.
Solution for Oracle/Sun deal: Make MySQL independent

10.

11. Oracle should agree to put MySQL in the hands of an independent non-profit
12. guardian, proposes the Free Software Foundation Europe. The Free Software
13. community could develop MySQL to its full potential, while Oracle would not
14. have to worry that a competitor could take over the database project.
15.

16. "Competition in the software market is very important, because it
17. drives innovation", says Karsten Gerloff, President of the Free
18. Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). "The fate of a project like
19. MySQL should not depend on a single company."
20.

21. By moving the MySQL issue out of the way, this would make it possible
22. for Oracle to quickly complete the acquisition of Sun Microsystems and
23. prevent further losses.

25. FSFE has published a detailed analysis of the problem that MySQL poses
26. for Oracle, and for competition in the database market:

32. MySQL is the stumbling block in Oracle's acquisition of Sun
33. Microsystems. With this deal, the biggest maker of proprietary databases
34. would gain control of MySQL, a large Free Software database project. The
35. European Commission is so far refusing to approve the deal because it is
36. worried about its effects on competition. At the same time, Sun is
37. quickly shedding money and jobs.
