  9. <h2>Revolution failed: Facebook not available in Egypt</h2>
  10. <p>"On 27th January facebook was shut down in Egypt. For the
  11. moment this stopped the protests. Media assumes that this is due to the
  12. influence of Mubarak's granddaughter who is Mark Zuckerberg's girl-friend." Of
  13. course this is not true. But with software which is controlled by one company,
  14. something like this can happen. What if the owner of the social network would
  15. have been an Egypt company? Would this company have been able to resist state
  16. pressure?</p>
  17. <p>For a long time dedicated people have been working on decentralised Free
  18. Software solutions, to make sure there is no vulnerable single point of
  19. control. We as citiziens should be in control of our tools, and as most of
  20. those tools today are comprised of software we do need decentralised software.
  21. That's why FSFE organised a related <a
  22. href="">track at FSCONS</a>, and our staff as
  23. well as dedicated volunteers like Torsten Grote <a
  24. href="">gather information</a>, <a
  25. href="">give talks</a> or <a
  26. href="">interviews</a>. </p>
  27. <p>Karsten Gerloff gave a talk on <a
  28. href="">
  29. "Power Software Freedom"</a> (there is a <a
  30. href="">
  31. good summary by Brian Gough</a>) at FOSDEM this month, and one of the event's
  32. keynotes <a
  33. href="">"Why
  34. Political Liberty Depends on Software Freedom More Than Ever"</a> by Eben
  35. Moglen targetted this topic as well, especially the so-called <a
  36. href="">"Freedom Box"</a>
  37. which started to receive good media coverage in turn, and will hopefully push
  38. this topic even further.</p>
  39. <h2>Lawyered! - FSFE's legal workshop</h2>
  40. <p>More than 75 lawyers, for 2 days, in 1 room -- and all of this organised by
  41. the FSFE. What is it about? We do this to ensure that the best possible legal
  42. knowledge about Free Software is shared between everyone, no matter whether
  43. individuals, businesses or initiatives.</p>
  44. <p>As part of this, FSFE facilitates an annual event called <a
  45. href="/activities/ln/llw.html">European Legal Network
  46. Conference</a> to allow legal experts to discuss the future of Free Software
  47. law and governance. This has become the world's premier event for debating,
  48. discussing and sharing knowledge around Free Software legal affairs. </p>
  49. <p>This year it will be held at the NH Barbizon Palace, Amsterdam, between the
  50. 7th and 8th of April, and will feature speakers like Carlo Piana from FSFE,
  51. Mark Shuttleworth from Canonical, Eben Moglen from SFLC, and Harald Welte from
