  8. <h2>Robots, Football, and Education</h2>
  9. <p newsteaser="yes">Their mission is to bring Free Software into schools
  10. and universities. Their new task is to gather information about <a
  11. href="http://wiki.fsfe.org/Education#stakeholders">their
  12. stakeholders</a>, and <a href="/about/printable/printable.html">create
  13. targeted leaflets</a>. And I am sure the favourite colour of the
  14. coordinators <a href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/riepernet/">Thomas
  15. Jensch</a> and <a href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/guido">Guido Arnold</a>
  16. is <a href="http://fellowship.fsfe.org">Fellowship</a> green. That's <a
  17. href="/activities/education/education.html">our education team</a>.</p>
  18. <p>Can robots help with that? We think they can. Our education team had
  19. <a
  20. href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/guido/2010/12/freedroidz-workshop-with-tarent/">a
  21. first meeting</a> to get trained in giving programming workshops using
  22. freedroidz robots. We want to teach pupils how to program, show them
  23. that it's good to share and co-operate, and explain Free Software to
  24. their teachers, parents, and
  25. politicians.</p>
  26. <p>And what about football? Regular readers might remember that Guido
  27. Arnold is running a parallel tournament to the football championship in
  28. Europe 2012 where the discipline is Free Software usage in government.
  29. So every time there is a football match, Guido starts a Free Software
  30. match between them, while a huge part is of course the government's
  31. education policy. Read <a
  32. href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/guido/category/euro2012/">Guido's blog</a>
  33. to find out why Russia is a hot candidate for the European champion, but
  34. why we need more information on Eastern European countries.</p>
  35. <h2>Public institutions - hares or snails?</h2>
  36. <p>Already, 203 public institutions have removed advertisements for
  37. proprietary PDF readers from their websites. Particularly outstanding
  38. were the responses from Croatia, Russia and Slovenia. In Croatia all
  39. except one reported institution deleted the advertisement. Half of those
  40. contacted in Russia and Slovenia fulfilled FSFE's request. Amongst the
  41. public institutions are ministries, parliaments, law enforcement
  42. agencies, local governments, and other administrations.</p>
  43. <p>With <a href="/campaigns/pdfreaders/pdfreaders.html">our
  44. PDFreaders campaign</a> we will continue to follow-up with the <a
  45. href="/campaigns/pdfreaders/buglist.html">reported institutions</a>
  46. and you can still encourage friends <a
  47. href="/campaigns/pdfreaders/petition.html">to sign the corresponding
  48. petition</a>.</p>
  49. <h2>Something completely different</h2>
  50. <ul>
  51. <li>You think your old C64 was slow? Working on the United Nations
  52. level will change your mind. Karsten Gerloff wrote an article about
  53. FSFE's UN work: <a href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/gerloff/?p=434">"WIPO
  54. CDIP/6: Moving the glacier"</a>.</li>
  55. <li>Open Standards in Europe: The European Commission published the
  56. new version of the European Interoperability Framework (EIF). We at
  57. FSFE have been <a href="/activities/os/eifv2.html">working on this
  58. document</a> for a long time. Read <a
  59. href="/news/2010/news-20101216-01.html">our press
  60. release</a> and an <a
  61. href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/gerloff/2010/12/17/assessing-the-new-european-interoperability-framework/">
  62. article by Karsten assessing the new EIF</a>. </li>
  63. <li>Current developments at Nokia, the transformative power of Free
  64. Software, and the potential dangers posed by the use of Free Software
  65. by large organisations. Those are the topics of the <a
  66. href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/fellowship-interviews/?p=198">current
  67. Fellowship interview with Alexander Kahl</a>, Fedora packager, Lisp,
  68. JavaScript and
  69. Perl programmer, and active FSFE volunteer.</li>
  70. <li>While Torsten Grote <a href="http://blogs.fsfe.org/mk/?p=698">gave
  71. a radio interview (German)</a> about risks of cloud computing and
  72. chances of distributed Free Software, Björn Schiessle <a
  73. href="http://blog.schiessle.org/2010/12/19/a-new-toy-arrived/">writes
  74. about how he wants to install</a> distributed software at home.</li>
  75. </ul>
  76. <h2>Get active: Help with Euro 2012 championship</h2>
  77. <p>Help us gathering information about government's Free Software usage.
  78. This information helps us to evaluate the current situation and of
  79. course it will decide who will be the European Free Software champion in
  80. 2012. <a
  81. href="http://wiki.fsfe.org/Free_Software_usage_in_public_administration">Add
  82. the information on our website</a> before March 25 and it will
  83. influence the next matches, add information continuously and it will
  84. help Free Software activists all over the world.</p>
