  8. <h1>FSFE supports Hellwig's GPL compliance lawsuit</h1>
  9. <p>FSFE welcomes
  10. the <a href="http://sfconservancy.org/news/2015/mar/05/vmware-lawsuit/">action</a>
  11. which Christoph Hellwig and the Software Freedom
  12. Conservancy are taking to bring VMware into compliance
  13. with the GNU General Public License.</p>
  14. <blockquote><p>
  15. FSFE's president Karsten Gerloff comments: "Free Software
  16. is a public resource, and it is governed by legal rules
  17. and social norms. Anyone who draws on this resource
  18. without respecting those rules and norms does damage to
  19. the community at large. The great majority of such
  20. problems are successfully resolved through dialogue and
  21. goodwill. It is only when dialogue fails that legal steps
  22. become necessary in order to protect this resource which
  23. we all share.
  24. </p></blockquote>
  25. <p>
  26. While FSFE regrets that this lawsuit has arisen, we
  27. believe that safeguarding Free Software against those who
  28. try to appropriate for themselves what belongs to us all
  29. is of the utmost importance.
