  7. <h1>Jonas Öberg joins FSFE as Executive Director</h1>
  8. <p newsteaser="yes">FSFE has recruited long-time Free
  9. Software activist Jonas Öberg to be the organisation's
  10. Executive Director. He joins the organisation's leadership
  11. team on March 1.
  12. </p>
  13. <p><a href="">Jonas
  14. Öberg</a> is one of FSFE's founding members, and was the
  15. organisation's vice president from 2001 through 2008. He has
  16. considerable experience in managing Free Software-related
  17. projects and organisations. Before joining as the organisation's
  18. Executive Director, he has been a Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow
  19. working on the project to create a global provenance
  20. repository for creative works, worked as Creative Commons'
  21. regional coordinator in Europe, lectured in Software Engineering
  22. and built up the conference FSCONS in its original form.

  25. Jonas first started volunteering for Free Software in 1998,
  26. while studying mathematics at a university level. Finding the
  27. classes in computer science much more interesting than
  28. mathematics, he soon found Free Software and began volunteering
  29. for the Free Software Foundation as chief webmaster for the
  30. GNU Project. Through the years, he's also participated in
  31. Debian, the GNOME project, and authored the occasional software
  32. himself.

  34. <blockquote><p>"We're absolutely delighted to have Jonas on
  35. board," says Karsten Gerloff, FSFE's president. "FSFE's
  36. volunteers and staff are enourmously dedicated and
  37. motivated. Jonas will channel this energy into an even
  38. greater capacity for action. Thanks to him, we will be able
  39. to achieve so much more for Free Software."</p></blockquote>
  40. <blockquote><p>"We face a need to secure the legal, social
  41. and technical foundations of Free Software, as well as continuing
  42. the work of raising awareness of Free Software," says Jonas Öberg.
  43. "Those are challenges that I very much look forward to tackling
  44. together with our staff, Fellows and volunteers across Europe and
  45. elsewhere, as well as in collaboration with other organisations."
