8.
Freedom to Read, Freedom to Write: Celebrating Document Freedom Day 2011

9.

10. Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) invites individuals, community
11. groups and institutions to celebrate the Document Freedom Day (DFD) on
12. March 30th. DFD is a global day to celebrate Open Standards and open
13. document formats and its importance. Open Standards ensure the freedom
14. to access your data, and the freedom to build Free Software to write
15. and read data in specific formats.
16.

17.

18. You can participate by organizing activities in your home town.
19. Distributing fliers, organizing talks, adding a banner on your blog,
20. donating money: there are many ways you can help spread awareness
21. about Open Standards.
22.

23.

24. We would like at least 25 cities to take part in Document Freedom Day
25. 2011. Help us to make this event a global success!

35.
Why Document Freedom Day?

36.

37. An ever greater part of our communication moves into the digital
38. world. In the digital society, Open Standards and open document
39. formats provide us with the freedom to read and write. They are
40. crucial to ensure our ability to exchange information, remain
41. independent of software vendors, and keep our data accessible in the
42. long term. Open Standards also make sure that we are able to
43. communicate and work using Free Software.
44.

45.
What are Open Standards?

46.

47. Open Standards are a common language that all computers can speak.
48. They enable us to work and communicate using Free Software. They make
49. it possible for developers to write Free Software applications that
50. are compatible with other solutions, and allow users to migrate to
51. Free Software solutions without losing access to their data.
52.

53.
What is the aim of the Campaign?

54.

55. The campaign brings a message about Open Standards and document
56. formats to a non-technical audience. Open Standards are a basic
57. condition for freedom and choice in software. Document Freedom Day
58. raises awareness for Open Standards and lets everyone contribute to a
59. better information society. It's easy and fun to participate in
60. Document Freedom Day, whether as a group or as an individual.
61.

62.

63. Document Freedom Day is coordinated by the
