  8. <h1>Icelandic developer receives Nordic Free Software Award</h1>
  9. <p>Bjarni Rúnar Einarsson, Free Software developer and community
  10. builder from Iceland, has received the Nordic Free Software Award.</p>
  11. <p>This annual prize was awarded on Saturday by Föreningen för Fri Kultur
  12. och Programvara and Free Software Foundation Europe at the Free
  13. Software Conference and Nordic Summit (FSCONS) which took place in
  14. Gothenburg, Sweden this weekend.</p>
  15. <p>Einarsson has been a leading figure in Iceland's Free Software
  16. movement for more than a decade. He has been driving the country's
  17. Free Software and free culture community, founding and participating
  18. in various groups such as Vinix, contributing to the KDE project, and
  19. starting netverjar.is, an organisation fighting for civil rights on
  20. the Internet.</p>
  21. <p>"Without Bjarni, Iceland's Free Software community wouldn't be what it
  22. is today," says Karsten Gerloff, President of the Free Software
  23. Foundation Europe. "People like Bjarni are the lifeblood of our
  24. community. I'm very glad to see his work recognised in this way."</p>
  25. <p>Bjarni has advocated the use of Free Software by maintaining and
  26. distributing CDs with a free operating system, both translating and
  27. developing Free Software for several years.</p>
  28. <p>"The Nordic Free Software Award is special because it's a recognition
  29. from your peers," comments 2009 award recipient, the Swedish Free
  30. Software developer Daniel Stehnberg. "It means having your work
  31. appreciated by people who understand what you have achieved."</p>
