  8. <p newsteaser="yes">Bjarni Rúnar Einarsson, Free Software developer and community
  9. builder from Iceland, has received the Nordic Free Software Award.</p>
  10. <p>This annual prize was awarded on Saturday by Föreningen för Fri Kultur
  11. och Programvara and Free Software Foundation Europe at the Free
  12. Software Conference and Nordic Summit (FSCONS) which took place in
  13. Gothenburg, Sweden this weekend.</p>
  14. <p>Einarsson has been a leading figure in Iceland's Free Software
  15. movement for more than a decade. He has been driving the country's
  16. Free Software and free culture community, founding and participating
  17. in various groups such as Vinix, contributing to the KDE project, and
  18. starting netverjar.is, an organisation fighting for civil rights on
  19. the Internet.</p>
  20. <p>"Without Bjarni, Iceland's Free Software community wouldn't be what it
  21. is today," says Karsten Gerloff, President of the Free Software
  22. Foundation Europe. "People like Bjarni are the lifeblood of our
  23. community. I'm very glad to see his work recognised in this way."</p>
  24. <p>Bjarni has advocated the use of Free Software by maintaining and
  25. distributing CDs with a free operating system, both translating and
  26. developing Free Software for several years.</p>
  27. <p>"The Nordic Free Software Award is special because it's a recognition
  28. from your peers," comments 2009 award recipient, the Swedish Free
  29. Software developer Daniel Stehnberg. "It means having your work
  30. appreciated by people who understand what you have achieved."</p>
