  8. <h1>FSFE: Stop unfair advertising - get your government to promote free PDF readers!</h1>
  9. <p>The Free Software Foundation Europe calls on all Europeans to seek out <a href="/activities/pdfreaders/pdfreaders.html">advertisements for proprietary PDF readers on their government's
  10. websites, and report them</a>. In addition, FSFE has prepared
  11. <a href="/activities/pdfreaders/petition.html">a petition</a>
  12. demanding an end to such advertising practices, and encourages the
  13. public to <a href="/activities/pdfreaders/petition.html">sign it</a>.</p>
  14. <p>"Every time that state websites link to non-free applications and
  15. encourage visitors to use them, they needlessly encourage citizens to
  16. throw away their freedom", says Karsten Gerloff, FSFE's President.</p>
  17. <p>As websites such as <a href=""></a> demonstrate, Free
  18. Software PDF readers exist for all major operating systems. Fellows of
  19. FSFE launched the project in 2009 in response to public bodies' habit
  20. of advertising a particular non-free product on their sites.</p>
  21. <p>FSFE's Fellowship Coordinator Matthias Kirschner comments: "What would
  22. you think about a sign on the highway saying 'You need a Volkswagen to
  23. drive on this road. Contact your Volkswagen dealer for a gratis test
  24. drive'? When it comes to PDF readers, governments seem to think that
  25. this is acceptable."</p>
  26. <p>Such endorsements give unfair advantage to whichever proprietary
  27. product they recommend, and are often accompanied by inaccurate
  28. statements presenting the application as the only available option.</p>
  29. <p>The hunt begins on September 13th, and will continue until October
  30. 17th 2010. Prizes will be awarded at the end of October to the
  31. individuals and groups who report the greatest number of proprietary software
  32. advertisements on government websites.</p>
  33. <p>Happy hunting!</p>
