  10. <h1>Free Software in Education</h1>
  11. <p id="introduction">
  12. We actively promote the use of Free Software in schools and
  13. universities as it encourages schooling of understanding over
  14. product training and upholds the scientific principle.
  15. </p>
  16. <p>
  17. Already during its first general assembly, FSFE identified <a
  18. href="http://fsfe.org/about/reports/es-2003">education as
  19. one of the most important areas for activity</a> so young people and
  20. students would have the chance of getting in touch with knowledge instead
  21. of mere product schooling. Therefore the FSFE started a <a href="/activities/education/eduteam.en.html">Free Software in
  22. Education working group</a> to focus on these efforts. Today, it acts as a hub and works on
  23. monitoring the European situation. We participate in Free Software
  24. events and assist other initiatives in making the change possible.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>
  27. Amongst other arguments for Free Software, here are four of the key benefits for education:
  28. </p>
  29. <ul>
  30. <li>
  31. <strong>Sharing:</strong> Using free software allows schools to
  32. teach children to share and cooperate.
  33. </li>
  34. <li>
  35. <strong>Learning to program:</strong> The possibility/freedom to
  36. tinker motivates children to learn more.
  37. </li>
  38. <li>
  39. <strong>Easy to administer:</strong> Free Software is stable,
  40. secure and reliable. It offers unrestricted access to the source
  41. code, thus allowing to modify or adapt it to the schools'
  42. needs.
  43. </li>
  44. <li>
  45. <strong>Licences:</strong> With Free Software, teachers can give
  46. a copy to each student. There is no risk to mislead any child
  47. to use an illegal copy.
  48. </li>
  49. </ul>
