Luckily, the Google Play Store is not the only source to obtain apps for your Android devices. Luckily because there are several issues with the Google Play Store: It offers you non-free and intransparent software, let alone the fact that using Google Play Store also requires a Google account and Google software that continuously spies on you and tracks your behaviour. It is recommended to not use this market at all.

In sum, it is recommended to not use this market at all.
The <ahref="http://f-droid.org/">F-Droid initiative introduced an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. It builds a repository of easily-installable Free Software apps for the Android platform. There is an Android client application that makes it easy to browse Free Software applications, install them onto your device, and keep track of updates.

In practice, F-Droid is like other stores that make it easy to browse applications, install them onto your device, and keep track of updates. With the difference being that in F-Droid all applications are Free Software.

The F-Droid store has many benefits in comparison to the Google Play store: It only offery you Free Software apps, no account is needed and you can use it anonymously. There are no hidden costs and the store is transparent about any <ahref="https://f-droid.org/wiki/page/AntiFeatures">antifeatures an app contains.

The F-Droid store is not available in any other store. If your custom ROM does not come with f-droid pre-installed or you like to try F-Droid in your stock Android, you need to download it from ist homepage and manually install it on your phone once. To help you get started, we produced a <ahref="/contribute/spreadtheword.html#f-droid">leaflet that explains the installation and use of F-Droid. It also includes some recommendations of pretty good Free Software Apps for you to use.

<h2class="painted"id="discover-the-world-of-free-software-apps">Discover the world of Free Software apps

Nowadays, we fortunately live in a world in which we can choose from
various Free Software apps for almost any use case. So many, that it is impossible to list them all. This section only aims at presenting a small selection to help you get started. Being listed here does not mean the app is of higher quality than another. We mainly selected them based on their popularity and we encourage you to discover the best apps by yourself and browse the F-Droid repository for what your are looking for.

Web browser are among the most used apps on any smartphone. There are plenty of browsers available on F-Droid, from <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.mozilla.fennec_fdroid">Firefox to the <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.stoutner.privacybrowser.standard">Privacy Browser to <ahref="https://guardianproject.info/fdroid/">Tor and many more. We can only list the two most popular ones below:

If you like the Mozilla Firefox, then <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.mozilla.fennec_fdroid/">Fennec F-Droid will be your choice. Fennec F-Droid is based on the latest Firefox release (codenamed Fenix). It has proprietary bits and telemetry removed, but still connects to various Mozilla and Google services that can track users.

If you like Chromium, then <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.anddevw.getchromium/">getChromium will be your choice. The app is a little helper to install the latest build of Chromium for Android. Push the button to install Chromium, then push the button and install Chromium again. Each time you install Chromium it updates Chromium. Chromium unfortunately does not auto-update.

<h2class="painted">Use Aurora to replace Google Play store

<divclass="infoitem">
<h3id="aurora">Aurora

<h2class="painted"id="chats-and-messaging">Chats and messaging

Again, chats and messaging clients are among the most used apps on most smartphones and naturally the choice of options is exhausting. Some of them are complete Free Software like <ahref="">Signal, others only the client is Free Software, like <ahref="">Telegram. Some are centralised, others are decentralised or can even be used offline, like <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.briarproject.briar.android">Briar. Again, we can only give you a glimpse on popula apps.

Description of how you can use Aurora to install apps from the Google and why it matters: Sadly, not all Free Software apps are in F-Droid. If you need an app, that's available in the Google Play Store, but not in F-Droid, you can use the Free Software App called Aurora, that is (<ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.aurora.store/">available for download in F-droid). Aurora is in App store that allows you to gets get Apps that are only availabe in the Google Play Store, but in a more private way and being able to see the license of the App before you download it (in Google Play you cannot).

<ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.telegram.messenger/">Telegram is a very popular chat application whose client is available as Free Software but that unfortunately is running proprietary software in the backend.

<ahref="https://signal.org/android/apk/">Signal is becoming more and more popular as an encrpyted chat application. Its benefit is that the client as well as the server software is Free Software. Unfortunately you cannot install it directly from F-Droid but have to either include the repository in F-Droid or directly install it from the <ahref="https://signal.org/android/apk/">web page.

<h2class="painted"id="selection">Selected apps for common use cases

Nowadays, we fortunately live in a world in which we can choose from
various Free Software apps for almost any use case. This section aims
to present a small selection of apps which are fitting for
starters. By no means can such a list be ever perfect for every individual
case. We also recommend you to look at the complete <a

<h4id="maps">Social Media

AVOID: This and that

<ahref="">Tusky. A client for Mastodon <ahref="">D

Many social media platforms are critical to use for several reasons. Those who are proprietary and do not offer open APIs do not end up of having a client in F-Droid. If you look for access to these social media platforms read about how to connect using the <ahref="">Aurora store.

If you have one or more accounts in the Fediverse, <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/fr.gouv.etalab.mastodon/">Fedilab is probably wha you are looking for. It supports Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed, Peertube, GNU Social and Friendica. Also it comes with advanced features like scheduling toots and boosts.

If you use Twitter, then <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.mariotaku.twidere/">Twidere is probably what you are looking for. It comes as a client that is focussed on Twitter and that comes with a lot of features.

<ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.fsck.k9/">K-9 Mail enables its users to add multiple email accounts, offers a wide range of options and support integration with encryption apps like OpenKeychain that allow you to send and receive GnuPG encrypted messages.

Plenty of Free Software apps aim to make you enjoy audio and video on your mobile phone. And others allow you to interact remote with multimedia applicaions on your other computers. Again, we can only glimpse on the options available.

If you like watching Youtube, then <ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.schabi.newpipe/">NewPipe is probably the app you are looking for. It comes as a lightweight YouTube frontend and the best is: NewPipe does not use any Google framework libraries, or the YouTube API. It only parses the website in order to gain the information it needs. Therefore this app can be used on devices without Google Services installed. Also, you don't need a YouTube account to use NewPipe,.

<ahref="https://f-droid.org/packages/de.danoeh.antennapod/">AntennaPod is a podcast manager and player that gives you instant access to millions of free and paid podcasts, from independent podcasters to large publishing houses such as the BBC, NPR and CNN. Add, import and export their feeds hassle-free using the iTunes podcast database, OPML files or simple RSS URLs.

Want to play? There are plenty of games to discover in F-Droid, choose the one that matches your interests. To get you started a tiny selection below.

<ahref="https://f-droid.org/packages/com.uberspot.a2048/">2048 is a popular Puzzle Game. The F-Droid download is a port of the 2048 game by Gabriele Cirulli. It's playable without network connection.

<ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.shatteredpixel.shatteredpixeldungeon/">Shattered Pixel Dungeon is a traditional roguelike game with pixel-art graphics and simple interface. Based
on com.watabou.pixeldungeon.

Every game is unique, with four different playable characters, randomized levels
and enemies, and over 150 items to collect and use. The game is simple to get
into, but has lots of depth. Strategy is required if you want to win!

You do not need to use Google Maps on your phone. Instead you can use maps free of advertisement, without spying on your location and completely offline. These apps usually use <ahref="https://www.openstreetmap.org/">OpenStreet Map which is like the Wikipedia for maps: Anyone can edit it and all together create the most advanced map available. Two of such apps - the most common - we have listed below and there are many more out there.

Description of <ahref="https://osmand.net/">Osmand ... Osmand is the Swiss knife for Navigation and Maps. You can download OpenStreetMaps Tiles and use them offline etc.

<ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/net.osmand.plus/">OsmAnd+ (OSM Automated Navigation Directions) is a map and navigation application with access to OpenStreetMap data. Osmand is feature rich and the swiss-knife for offline navigation and map customizing.

Description: Here a description of <ahref="https://organicmaps.app/">Organic Maps. Not as advanced as OpenStreetMap but looks like Google Maps and has a better search function....

They want to make the use of public transport as easy as possible for everybody. This app uses the data of various local public transport agencies and provides a unified interface for them. Among other features it offers trip routing and live departures.

<ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.schildbach.oeffi/">Öffi makes use of official time table and connection data of the selected public transit authority! This ensures that disruptions become visible as soon as the transit authority has included them with the data. It offers trip planner, live departure times, nearby stations and interactive network plans.

Some messaging apps like Telegram(r) are completely or mostly Free Software but have other antifeatures like dependencies on non-free servers and libraries, so we discourage to use them. The following are.

Enjoy the privacy and security of Free Software Apps when you are on the move.
<h2class="painted">Use microG to replace Google services

<ahef="https://microg.org/">MicroG is a "Free Software re-implementation of Google’s proprietary Android user space apps and libraries". In practice that means MicroG allows other Free Software apps to seamlessly integrate into the Android system without having to use proprietary Google libraries for this. This is for example useful to have accurate and fast push notifications or location services of particular apps.

MicroG is <ahref="https://microg.org/download.html">available as an F-Droid repository but you can also download its apks directly. Free Software users get extended application support, privacy-caring users can reduce or monitor data that is sent to Google and especially older phones can expect some battery life improvements.

<h2class="painted">Use Aurora to replace Google Play store

Is there an app that you are looking for that is not available in F-Droid? Most probably this is not a bug but a feature. Because if the app you are looking for is a proprietary app you will not find it in F-Droid.

So what to do if you like to use as much as Free Software as possible and not Google account and services but on the other hand there is this one app or two that you really need and that is only available in the Google Play Store? Then you can use the Free Software App store called Aurora, that is (<ahref="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.aurora.store/">available for download in F-droid). Aurora is in App store that allows you to get Apps that are only availabe in the Google Play Store, but in a more private way. If you stick to apps that are available for no costs, you actually do not even need a Google account for using it.

<h2class="painted"id="replace-your-android-with-a-custom-rom">Replace your Android with a custom ROM

An operating system is a collection of software that enables you to use
your phone and run other applications on it. Even though Android is <a
free, many phones ship with proprietary components and add-ons. Some
phones also have a locked boot loader
which prevents you from booting and installing other operating systems.
If you want to buy an Android phone, make sure that the boot loader can
be unlocked.

On some devices it can only be unlocked with clever hacks
and their manufacturers tend to declare your warranty void when you unlock their device's boot loader.
But, given European Directive 1999/44/CE, just the fact that you modified or changed the software of your device,
is not a sufficient reason to void your statutory warranty.
<ahref="/freesoftware/legal/flashingdevices.html"title="Does rooting your phone invalidate its warranty?">See Carlo Piana's and Matija Šuklje's analysis for more information.

<ahref="https://replicant.us/">Replicant "is a free software mobile operating system putting the emphasis on freedom and privacy/security" and is 100% Free Software. Since it does not
use any non-free drivers, it currently works on a limited number of
devices. <ahref="https://replicant.us/supported-devices.php">List of supported Replicant devices.

<ahref="https://lineageos.org/">LineageOS is a very popular Custom-ROM that works on a huge number of different devices. This is because it uses proprietary drivers and firmware. Even though it is usually more free than the default software your Android device comes with, freedom is not its main objective. You do not need a Google account to use LineageOS, neither does it contain Google Play services. LineageOS works pretty good with the Free Software implementation microG.<ahref="https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/"> List of supported LineageOS devices

<ahref="https://grapheneos.org/">GrapheneOS "is a privacy and security focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility developed as a non-profit open source project. Graphene OS currently only supports Pixel phones. GrapheneOS does not support microG. <ahref="https://grapheneos.org/releases/">List of supported GrapheneOS devices.

<ahref="https://calyxos.org/get/">CalyxOS describes itself as "Privacy by Design". It is not as restrictive as GrapheneOS though and optionaly allows the user to install microG. CalyxOS only works on devices with a verified boot, which means the boot-loader is locked and can't be manipulated. CalyxOS also offers to go back to your stock Android, if you change your mind in the future. You probably won't but it's good to know that you can. <ahref="https://calyxos.org/install/">List of supported CalyxOS devices.

<ahref="https://e.foundation/">/e/ is "is a complete, fully “deGoogled”, mobile ecosystem". The idea is to form a privacy-enabled internal system for your smartphone with no Google apps or Google services accessing your personal data. Google services have been completely removed and replaced with microG. You can set up an account for advanced backup features. It does support a large number of devices and it is also possible to buy smartphones with /e/ pre-installed. <ahref="https://doc.e.foundation/devices">List of supported /e/ devices

Does rooting your device (e.g. an Android phone) and replacing its operating system with something else void your statutory warranty, if you are a consumer?

In short: No.

Statutory warranty should not become void by replacing the OS on an android phone. Vendors should provide a warranty as long as you have bought the device as a consumer in the European Union, unless the trader proves that the consumer's digital environment is not compatible with the technical requirements of the digital content or services supplied and provided that the trader has informed the consumer about such requirements in a clear and comprehensible manner before the conclusion of the contract.
