In order to extend usage lifetime of your phone and to get back full control of your device so you can self-determine when it is too old for further usage or not you can install a so-called "Custom ROM". Custom ROMs are Android alternatives based on the original operating system. Every time a new Android version is published there are multiple companies and communities who take the release code and re-publish it in a modified version. These versions usually exclude Google dependencies and software, hence are lightweight and slim. This comes with another benefit, that these Custom ROMs are easier to install on phones with less hardware capacities. But the biggestt benefit is that these Custom ROMs often get packaged for phones whose initial manufacturers do not support anymore. So if you manufacturer sold your phone with Android version X and does not offer you its follow up release, the Android version x+1, it is very likely a modified Custom ROM of Android version x+1 can be installed on your phone.

All Internet + Service Providers (ISPs) must allow end-users to + choose and use their own routers and modems within 6 months. + Also, it was secured that consumers who set up an alternative + router should still enjoy technical support by the ISPs. The + Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets' (ACM) decision + represents a victory for consumers in the Netherlands and a win + for net neutrality in Europe. +

    + The new rules passed after a persistent effort of the FSFE to + draw attention to the importance of Router Freedom. The FSFE + contacted BEREC raising the Router Freedom demand for the first + time three years ago, in 2018, resulting in establishing Router + Freedom as a standard for European countries.     In onze nieuwsbrief van augustus en september vieren we het verkregen recht van het gebruik van een eigen router in Nederland. We leggen uit waarom elke app die de verspreiding van Covid-19 aanpakt Vrije Software moet zijn. We delen het nieuws van onze levendige gemeenschap, volgen wat er in de zomer is gebeurd en er voor ons ligt.

    CovPass-apps zouden voor iedereen beschikbaar moeten zijn en dus Vrije Software moeten zijn

    + +

    + Apps die voor iedereen noodzakelijk zijn, zouden voor iedereen beschikbaar moeten zijn, zonder extra en propriëtaire software-winkels te moeten installeren. Dit was niet het geval met de Duitse CovPass-app, die het digitale COVID-certificaat van de EU voor Corona-vaccinatie op smartphones verstrekt. Deze was vanwege propriëtaire afhankelijkheden alleen beschikbaar in de app-winkels van Apple, Huawai en Google. Zo'n praktijk negeert diegenen die bewust propriëtaire software vermijden en kiezen voor het gebruik van Vrije Software. Voor hen was de app niet beschikbaar.

Samen hebben ze wekenlang belangeloos gewerkt + aan de ontwikkeling van de CovPass-app voor F-droid. De experts hebben ook + propriëtaire Google-bibliotheken die niet nodig waren om de app te laten functioneren verwijderd. +

    + Dit extra werk had voorkomen kunnen worden als de ontwikkelaars van de CovPass, die met publiek geld worden betaald, deze overbodige propriëtaire bibliotheken vanaf het begin niet zouden hebben toegevoegd. Bovendien verleende het bedrijf dat de CovPass ontwikkelt geen steun aan externe ontwikkelaars, wat het voor de vrijwilligers moeilijk maakte om verbeteringen aan te brengen. Hierdoor bleken verbeteringen die weinig inspanning van de van de oorspronkelijke ontwikkelaars zouden hebben gevergd een moeilijke taak voor externe deskundigen. Het is een typisch probleem dat kan vermeden worden door welke software dan ook waarvan de ontwikkeling met publiek geld is betaald als Vrije Software uit te brengen. +

Naast levende muziek, straatvoedsel en doe-het-zelf-werkgroepen, organiseerde het Weense FSFE-vrijwilligersteam een kraam om bezoekers de basisprincipes van Vrije Software uit te leggen. Het Veganmania-festival wordt bezocht door duizenden bezoekers met verschillende achtergronden. De supporters merkten in vergelijking met de vorige jaren een toename van het aantal mensen dat technisch bewust was. Verder waren nieuwkomers op het gebied van Vrije Software geïnteresseerd om onze gidsen met technische tips ter verbetering van computerveiligheid te lezen.     Word actief voor de federale verkiezing in Duitsland

    + Op 26 september wordt in Duitsland een nieuwe Bondsdag gekozen. Wij zijn betrokken bij de verkiezingen en willen er met onze activiteiten zeker van zijn dat "Publiek Geld? Publieke Code!" voor de volgende regering een belangrijke rol speelt. + Daarom willen we ervoor zorgen dat onze "Publiek Geld? Publieke Code!"-eisen zullen worden opgenomen in het regeerakkoord van de volgende Duitse regering. Om dit te bereiken hebben wij uw hulp en steun nodig.
