<p>Ook in de afgelopen maanden hebben we gezien dat sommige wereldspelers die sinds de 20e eeuw zijn gegroeid door de verkoop van gesloten bronproducten nu miljarden dollars investeren in het verwerven van wereldspelers die zijn gegroeid door de verkoop van diensten gebaseerd op Vrije Software in de 21e eeuw. Zo verkreeg Microsoft bijvoorbeeld de grootste broncode ter wereld door Github te kopen en kocht IBM 's werelds grootste aan Vrije Software gelieerde onderneming Red Hat. Hoewel we alleen maar kunnen raden welke effecten deze economische verschuivingen op de lange termijn zullen hebben zien we een groeiende economische interesse van derde partijen in Vrije Software. Hoewel dit niet noodzakelijkerwijs een slechte ontwikkeling is moet er tegelijkertijd evenwicht worden gezocht. Met groeiend investeringskapitaal lijkt het cruciaal dat er ook organisaties zonder winstoogmerk zijn die het potentieel hebben om een neutrale maar florerende omgeving voor Vrije Software te beschermen - zoals de Free Software Foundation Europe. Het is de eerste verklaring van <a href="https://fsfe.org/about/mission">onze missie</a> dat we ervoor zorgen dat de belangen van de individuele gebruikers worden beschermd door gebruikers in staat te stellen om technologie te controleren. En door dit te doen faciliteren we hopelijk de toegang tot onze weg naar een vrije samenleving.</p>
